Aurora lucis rutilat - Hymn for Laudes during Third Week of Easter

Aurora lucis rutilat: the dawn shines with light. This hymn, composed around the 4th or 5th century and traditionally attributed to Saint Ambroise, is sung during the Laudes the Third Week of Easter and celebrates the light of the Resurrection, indescribable joy for the world. The work of the Lord conquers death and frees us from pain. No more tears: the Lord is risen, the radiant Angel proclaims it! Glory to you, Risen Lord! This vibrant, agile hymn, on the 8th mode, is fully syllabic (one note per syllable) except for the joyful and clear vocalisation which crowns the ascent of the first two lines.

Aurora lucis rutilat,
Caelum laudibus intonat
Mundus exsultans jubilat,
Gemens infernus ululat.

Cum Rex ille fortissimus,
Mortis confractis viribus,
Pede conculcans tartara
Solvit a poena miseros.

Ille, qui clausus lapide
Custoditur sub milite,
Triumphans pompa nobili
Victor surgit de funere.

Solutis jam gemitibus
Et inferni doloribus,
Quia surrexit Dominus
Resplendens clamat Angelus.

Quaesumus, Auctor omnium,
In hoc paschali gaudio,
Ab omni mortis impetu,
Tuum defende populum.

Gloria tibi Domine,
Qui surrexisti a mortuis,
Cum Patre et Sancto Spiritu,
In sempiterna saecula. Amen.
