St.
Augustine My Lord and my God
Is
there anything more valuable than your soul? Nothing indeed, except God
himself; apart from him you can find nothing better than your own soul because
when you are perfect you will be like the angels, and above them is only their
creator. Lift up your heart to him and don’t settle for something lower, saying
‘Oh, that is beyond me’.
You
probably won’t get that money you want. It does not at all follow that because
you want it you will get it. But if you long for God, you can possess him. Even
before you wanted him he drew near you, when you turned away he beckoned you,
and when at last you turned to him in fear and confessed your sins in terror,
he tenderly consoled you.
Every
beautiful thing you see, every fair thing you love was made by God. Looking on
all those things, long for him more than for them all. Love him, and purify
your heart by faith so that you may come to see him who gave you your being,
and all you have.
Remember
that he who gave the happiness of this world gave it for our comfort. He gives
to all men the sun and the rain, the harvest and the springs of water, and he
will give you the gift of himself.
