17 oktober - H. Ignatius van Antiochië, bisschop en martelaar - Ik ben de tarwe van God: ik word gemalen door de tanden van de wilde dieren.

Als opvolger van de apostel Petrus stond Ignatius aan het hoofd van de kerk van Antiochië. Ter dood veroordeeld, werd hij naar Rome gevoerd om voor de wilde dieren geworpen te worden. Zo werd zijn getuigenis voor Christus onder keizer Trajanus in het jaar 107 met de marteldood bekroond. Tijdens zijn overtocht naar Rome schreef hij zeven brieven, gericht aan verschillende kerken. Daarin komen zijn wijsheid en kennis tot uitdrukking, als hij uitweidt over de persoon van Christus, de hiërarchie van de kerk en het christelijk levenspatroon. Reeds in de vierde eeuw werd hij te Antiochië op 17 oktober herdacht

Ik ben de tarwe van God: ik word gemalen door de tanden van de wilde dieren.

Ik schrijf aan alle kerken en druk allen op het hart dat ik graag sterf voor God, als gij het mij maar niet verhindert. Ik smeek u: laat uw welwillendheid mij niet ongelegen komen. Laat mij toch voedsel zijn voor de wilde dieren. Daardoor kan ik tot God komen. Ik ben de tarwe van God en door de tanden van de wilde dieren word ik gemalen om zuiver brood van Christus te worden. Smeekt Christus voor mij, dat ik door deze werktuigen mag worden tot een offergave voor God.
De vreugde van de wereld en alle koninkrijken van deze aarde kunnen mij niet helpen. Voor mij is het beter te sterven voor Jezus Christus dan te heersen over de uiteinden der aarde. Hem zoek ik die voor ons gestorven is, naar Hem verlang ik die voor ons is opgestaan. Mijn geboorte is nabij. Vergeeft mij, broeders en zusters. Belet mij niet te leven, laat niet toe dat ik sterf. Levert mij niet uit aan deze wereld, want ik wil van God zijn. Verleidt mij niet met dit aardse bestaan, maar laat mij het heldere licht ontvangen: eenmaal daar gekomen, zal ik pas ten volle mens zijn. Laat mij het lijden van mijn God navolgen. Ieder die Hem in zich draagt, zal weten wat ik verlang; hij zal met mij medelijden en begrijpen wat mij kwelt.
De vorst van deze wereld wil mij meevoeren en mijn verlangens die op God gericht zijn, misleiden. Laat dan toch niemand van u die aanwezig zijt, hem helpen; wilt liever mijn helper worden, dat wil zeggen: van God. Wilt toch niet Jezus Christus in de mond nemen, terwijl gij de wereld in uw hart draagt. Laat er geen nijd onder u wonen. Zelfs wanneer ik u persoonlijk erom zou vragen, gelooft mij dan niet: schenkt veeleer geloof aan datgene wat ik u schrijf. Immers, ik schrijf u, terwijl ik nog leef met het verlangen te sterven. Mijn liefde is gekruisigd en in mij brandt geen vuur dat naar het aardse verlangt. Levend en sprekend water is in mij, dat in mijn binnenste zegt: ‘Kom tot de Vader.’ Ik vind geen genoegen meer in het voedsel dat vergankelijk is, noch in de vreugden van dit bestaan. Het brood van God verlang ik, dat is het vlees van Jezus Christus, uit het geslacht van David, en als drank wens ik het bloed van Hem, die de onvergankelijke liefde is.
Ik wil niet meer op menselijke wijze leven. Dat zal zo zijn, als gij het wilt. Wilt het dan, zo vraag ik u, opdat ook gij welwillendheid ondervindt. Met weinig woorden smeek ik u: gelooft mij. Jezus Christus zal u openbaren dat ik de waarheid spreek. Hij is de mond zonder leugen, waardoor de Vader waarachtig gesproken heeft. Bidt voor mij, opdat ik het doel bereik. Niet naar het vlees heb ik u geschreven maar naar de geest van God. Wanneer ik zal lijden, dan zijt ge mij welgezind geweest; maar indien ik verworpen word, hebt ge mij gehaat.
Niets blijft u verborgen, wanneer ge jegens Jezus Christus een volmaakt geloof hebt en een volmaakte liefde; het begin is het geloof en het einde de liefde. Vernieuwt u in het geloof: dat is het vlees van de Heer; vernieuwt u in de liefde: dat is het bloed van Jezus Christus.Het begin is het geloof en het einde de liefde.

St Ignatius of Antioch (- 107)
He was the second bishop of Antioch after St Peter (the first being Evodius). He was arrested (some writers believe that he must have been denounced by a fellow-Christian), condemned to death, and transported to Rome to be thrown to the wild beasts in the arena. In one of his letters he describes the soldiers who were escorting him as being like “ten leopards, who when they are kindly treated only behave worse.”
  In the course of his journey he wrote seven letters to various churches, in which he dealt wisely and deeply with Christ, the organisation of the Church, and the Christian life. They are important documents for the early history of the Church, and they also reveal a deeply holy man who accepts his fate and begs the Christians in Rome not to try to deprive him of the crown of martyrdom.
  He was martyred in 107 and his feast was already being celebrated on this day in fourth-century Antioch.

  the sufferings of the martyrs adorn the Church,
  which is the Body of Christ.
As we celebrate the martyrdom of Saint Ignatius of Antioch,
  grant that it may be for us a constant source of strength,
  as it was for him the entry into glory.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
  who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
  one God, for ever and ever.

Almachtige eeuwige God, door het getuigenis van de martelaren geeft Gij aanzien aan uw kerk. Wij vragen dat de herdenking van de dood en de verheerlijking waarin de heilige Ignatius de ware grootheid heeft gevonden, ook ons sterkte en bescherming geeft. Door onze Heer Jezus Christus, uw Zoon, die met U leeft en heerst in de eenheid van de heilige Geest, God, door de eeuwen der eeuwen.

St. Ignatius of Antioch - Pray continually for the rest of humankind as well

From his epistle to the Ephesians (Chapter 10):

Pray continually for the rest of humankind as well, that they may find God, for there is in them hope for repentance. Therefore allow them to be instructed by you, at least by your deeds. In response to their anger, be gentle; in response to their boasts, be humble; in response to their slander, offer prayers; in response to their errors, be steadfast in the faith; in response to their cruelty, be civilized; do not be eager to imitate them. Let us show by our forbearance that we are their brothers and sisters, and let us be eager to be imitators of the Lord, to see how can be the more wronged, who the more cheated, who the more rejected, in order that no weed of the devil may be found among you, but that with complete purity and self-control you may abide in Christ Jesus physically and spiritually.

The harmony of unity

It is right for you to give glory in every way to Jesus Christ who has given glory to you; you must be made holy in all things by being united in perfect obedience, in submission to the bishop and the presbyters.

I am not giving you orders as if I were a person of importance. Even if I am a prisoner for the name of Christ, I am not yet made perfect in Jesus Christ. I am now beginning to be a disciple and I am speaking to you as my fellow disciple. It is you who should be strengthening me by your faith, your encouragement, your patience, your serenity. But since love will not allow me to be silent about you, I am taking the opportunity to urge you to be united in conformity with the mind of God. For Jesus Christ, our life, without whom we cannot live, is the mind of the Father, just as the bishops, appointed over the whole earth, are in conformity with the mind of Jesus Christ.

It is fitting, therefore, that you should be in agreement with the mind of the bishop as in fact you are. Your excellent presbyters, who are a credit to God, are as suited to the bishop as strings to a harp. So in your harmony of mind and heart the song you sing is Jesus Christ. Every one of you should form a choir, so that, in harmony of sound through harmony of hearts, and in unity taking the note from God, you may sing with one voice through Jesus Christ to the Father. If you do this, he will listen to you and see from your good works that you are members of his Son. It is then an advantage to you to live in perfect unity, so that at all times you may share in God.

If in a short space of time I have become so close a friend of your bishop—in a friendship not based on nature but on spiritual grounds—how much more blessed do I judge you to be, for you are as united with him as the Church is to Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ to the Father, so that all things are in harmony through unity. Let no one make any mistake: unless a person is within the sanctuary, he is deprived of God’s bread. For if the prayer of one or two has such power, how much more has the prayer of the bishop and the whole Church.
