In de geloofsbelijdenis verkondigen en belijden wij dat God niet alleen schepper van de hele geschapen wereld is, maar ook de "onzichtbare dingen", en we hebben gesproken over het bestaan van Engelen die opgeroepen zijn om zich te verklaren voor God of tegen God in een handeling van ingrijpende en onomkeerbare adhesie of afwijzing van zijn wil van het heil.
Als wij ons bij onze overwegingen aan de Heilige Schrift houden, dan blijken de Engelen, in zo ver ze zuivere geestwezens zijn, een bijzondere verwezenlijking van het “beeld van God” te zijn. Hij is immers de volmaakte Geest, zoals Jezus zelf het de Samaritaanse vrouw in herinnering brengt: “God is Geest” (Joh. 4, 24). Vanuit dit gezichtpunt zijn de Engelen de schepselen die het goddelijke voorbeeld het meest nabij staan. De naam, die de Heilige Schrift hen geeft, wijst erop dat dat, wat in de openbaring het meeste telt, de waarheid is omtrent de opgaven van de Engelen tegenover de mensen: Engel (Angelus) betekent namelijk “bode”. De Hebreeuwse betekenis malak, die in het Oude Testament wordt gebruikt, betekent nog precieser “delegaat”, gevolmachtigde, afgezant of "ambassadeur". De Engelen, geestelijke schepselen, hebben de opgave van bemiddeling en dienst in de betrekkingen tussen God en de mens. Uit dit oogpunt zegt de brief aan de Hebreeën dat aan Christus een “naam” – dus een bemiddelingsambt – gegeven werd, die hun naam ver overstijgt.
Het Oude Testament onderstreept vooral de bijzondere deelname van de Engelen aan de betuiging van lofprijzing en verheerlijking, die de Schepper als lofoffer van de kant van de geschapen wereld ontvangt. Op bijzondere wijze spreken de Psalmen daarvan, als ze bijv. uitroepen: “Looft Hem, al zijn Engelen...” (Ps. 148, 1-2). Iets dergelijks in Psalm 103: “Looft de Heer, gij zijn Engelen, sterke helden, die zijn bevelen volbrengen, die gehoorzamen aan zijn bevelen!” (Ps. 103, 20) Dit laatste vers van Psalm 103 wijst erop de Engelen op hun manier volgens het door de goddelijke Voorzienigheid opgestelde plan als “sterke helden ... zijn bevelen volbrengen”.
Vooral is aan de Engelen de hoede en de bescherming van de mensen toevertrouwd. Ze brengen hun smekingen en gebeden voor God, zoals bijv. het boek Tobias zegt 1 2 , terwijl er in de Psalm gezegd wordt: ‘Want Hij zal voor u zijn Engelen ontbieden, om u op al uw wegen te hoeden. Zij zullen u op handen dragen, opdat gij aan geen steen uw voeten zult stoten” (91, 11-12) . Volgens het boek Daniël kan men beweren dat de opgaven van de Engelen als afgezanten van de levende GOD zich niet alleen uitstrekken tot de afzonderlijke mensen en zulke waaraan bijzondere diensten zijn opgedragen, maar ook tot hele naties. 3

Het Nieuwe Testament doet de opgaven van de Engelen in hun betrekking tot de zending van Christus als Messias uitkomen, vooral tot het mysterie van de Menswording van de Zoon van God, zoals wij dat zien in het bericht over de aankondiging van de geboorte van Johannes de Doper 1 en van Christus zelf 2 , in de verklarende woorden aan Maria en Jozef 3 4 , in de aanwijzingen aan de herders in de nacht van de geboorte van de Heer 5 , in de bescherming van de pas geborene voor het gevaar van de vervolging van Herodes 6 .
Verder verhalen de evangelies de aanwezigheid van de Engelen tijdens de 40 dagen van Jezus’ vasten in de woestijn 7 en gedurende het gebed op Gethsemane (Lc. 22, 43). Na de verrijzenis van Christus is het weer een Engel, in de gedaante van een jongeling, die tegen de vrouwen zegt, toen ze bij het graf aangekomen, verbaasd waren het leeg aan te treffen: “Schrikt niet. Gij zoekt Jezus de Nazarener, die gekruisigd is. Hij is verrezen. Hij is niet hier... gaat aan zijn leerlingen zeggen... .” (Mc. 16, 5-7). Ook door Maria Magdalena, die het voorrecht van een persoonlijke verschijning van Jezus had, werden twee Engelen gezien (Joh. 20, 12-17). Na het heengaan van Christus vertoonden Engelen zich aan de apostelen om hen te zeggen: “Mannen van Galilea, wat staat gij naar de hemel te kijken? Deze Jezus die van u is weggenomen naar de hemel, zal op dezelfde wijze wederkeren als gij Hem naar de hemel hebt zien gaan” (Hand. 1, 10-11).
Het zijn de Engelen van het leven, van het lijden en van de verheerlijking van Christus. De Engelen van degene, die, zoals de H. Petrus schrijft “ten hemel gevaren zetelt aan Gods rechterhand, nadat Engelen en Machten en Krachten aan Hem onderworpen zijn”. (1 Pt. 3, 22)
Als we verdergaan tot de wederkomst van Christus, tot de "parousie", vinden we bij alle synoptici de opmerking, dat “de Mensenzoon ... komt, vergezeld van de Heilige Engelen, in de heerlijkheid van zijn Vader” (Mc. 8, 38) 1 2 3 4 . Men kan dus zeggen dat de Engelen als zuivere geestwezens niet alleen op de hun eigen wijze deelhebben aan de heiligheid van God zelf, maar ook op de beslissende momenten Christus omringen en Hem begeleiden bij de vervulling van zijn heilszending voor de mensen. Op dezelfde wijze hebben ook door de eeuwen heen de gehele Overlevering en het Leerambt van de Kerk aan de Engelen dit bijzonder karakter en deze functie van messiaanse dienst toegekend.

vervullen met eerbied, overgave en vertrouwen. Eerbied voor hun
tegenwoordigheid, overgave voor hun welwillendheid, vertrouwen om hun
bescherming. Zij zijn u dus nabij en zij niet alleen met u, maar ook voor u.
Zij zijn bij u om u te beschermen, zij zijn bij u om u van dienst te zijn.
Hoewel God hun dit nu bevolen heeft, mogen wij tegenover hen zelf, die met
zoveel liefde God daarin gehoorzamen en ons in grote moeilijkheden bijstaan,
niet ondankbaar zijn.
Laten
wij hun daarom toegewijd zijn en de zo gewichtige bewaarders dankbaar zijn.
Beminnen wij hen wederkerig en eren wij hen zoveel wij kunnen en zoveel wij
verplicht zijn. Heel onze liefde en eerbied moet toch aan Hem gegeven worden,
van Wie zowel zij zelf als wij alles hebben ontvangen. Door Wie wij kunnen eren
en beminnen en door Wie wij verdienen bemind en geëerd te worden.

Hem daarom, broeders, moeten wij zijn engelen van harte beminnen, als degenen
die eens onze mede-erfgenamen zullen zijn. Want nu reeds zijn wij kinderen van

Maar
– ofschoon wij nog zo klein zijn, en er voor ons nog een zo lange, en niet
alleen lange maar ook een zo gevaarlijke weg open ligt – wat zouden wij moeten
vrezen onder zulke leiders? Zij kunnen niet overweldigd worden of misleid, en
nog minder kunnen zij zelf misleiden, die ons bewaken op al onze wegen. Zij
zijn getrouw, voorzichtig en machtig, wat zouden wij vrezen? Laten wij hen
slechts volgen, hen vasthouden, en zo onder de bescherming blijven van de God

O God our heavenly Father, we offer You heartfelt thanks for the life and holiness of John Henry Newman. In him You give us an inspiring example of priest and teacher, heroic and humble in his labour for the salvation of souls and the pursuit of holiness. Through his intercession we ask You to lead us by the kindly light of the Holy Spirit, and so grant us peace and joy, in the one fold of the Redeemer. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
